Position Summary
The Youth Specialist is responsible for leading a group of children in our structured Roc Royal afterschool program, providing guidance, support, and supervision to ensure a safe, positive, and enriching environment. Reporting to the Manager of Programs, the Youth Specialist will develop and facilitate engaging activities, build meaningful relationships with participants, and help foster a sense of community and belonging. This role is ideal for someone passionate about youth development and committed to making a positive impact in the lives of young people.
Essential Duties and Responsibilites
Program Implementation:
Plan and lead age-appropriate activities, including academic support, recreational games, arts and crafts, team-building exercises, and social-emotional learning.
Create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that encourages participation, creativity, and positive interactions among all group members.
Adapt activities to meet the diverse needs and interests of participants, ensuring every child feels valued and engaged.
Supervision & Safety:
Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants at all times, maintaining a safe, clean, and organized program environment.
Monitor participant behavior and address any issues or conflicts that arise, using positive reinforcement and conflict resolution strategies.
Enforce program rules and guidelines consistently while modeling respect, empathy, and appropriate behavior.
Relationship Building:
Establish and maintain positive relationships with program participants, serving as a role model and mentor.
Communicate regularly with parents/guardians to provide updates on participant progress and address any concerns.
Foster a sense of belonging and community within the group, encouraging teamwork and mutual respect.
Reporting & Communication:
Maintain accurate records of attendance, incidents, and daily activities, and report any concerns or issues to the Manager of Programs.
Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and program evaluations as required by the Manager of Programs.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework in Education, Child Development, Psychology, or a related field is preferred.
Previous experience working with children or youth in an afterschool program, summer camp, or educational setting.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and build rapport with young people from diverse backgrounds.
Ability to plan and facilitate engaging activities that are both educational and fun.
Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for working with youth.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Basic knowledge of child development principles and best practices in youth programming.
CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
Additional Requirements
Must pass a background check and have a clear criminal record.
Physical ability to participate in activities, including bending, lifting, and being on your feet for extended periods.
