Position Summary
The Lead Youth Specialist is responsible for providing day-to-day leadership and support to Youth Specialists while ensuring the successful implementation of the ROC Royal afterschool program. Reporting to the Manager of Programs, this position serves as a point of contact during program hours, helping coordinate daily operations, maintaining a safe and engaging environment, and modeling best practices in youth development. The Lead Youth Specialist also works directly with children by planning and facilitating activities, mentoring participants, and fostering positive relationships with youth and families. This role is ideal for an experienced youth development professional who enjoys leading others while making a meaningful impact in the lives of young people.
Essential Duties and Responsibilites
Program Leadership & Coordination:
Support the Manager of Programs in the daily operation of the afterschool program, ensuring activities are implemented according to program goals and expectations.
Provide day-to-day guidance, coaching, and support to Youth Specialists, serving as a resource for questions and problem-solving.
Assist with assigning staff responsibilities and ensuring appropriate supervision ratios are maintained.
Help coordinate program schedules, transitions, special events, and daily logistics.
Monitor program quality and recommend improvements to enhance participant engagement and overall program effectiveness.
Program Implementation:
Plan and facilitate age-appropriate activities, including academic support, recreational games, arts and crafts, STEM-activities, team-building exercises, and social-emotional learning.
Ensure activities are engaging, inclusive, and aligned with program objectives.
Adapt programming to meet the diverse needs, interests, and abilities of participants.
Model effective youth engagement strategies and positive behavior management techniques for staff.
Supervision & Safety:
Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants by maintaining a safe, clean, and organized environment.
Address participant behavior concerns using positive behavior management and conflict resolution strategies.
Respond appropriately to emergencies and assist with documenting incidents.
Ensure program policies, procedures, and safety protocols are consistently followed by staff and participants.
Reporting & Communication:
Maintain accurate records of attendance, incidents, and daily activities, and report any concerns or issues to the Manager of Programs.
Communicate participant concerns, staffing needs, and operational issues to the Manager of Programs.
Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and program evaluations as required by the Manager of Programs.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree in Education, Child Development, Psychology, or a related field is preferred.
Minimum of 2 years of experience working with children or youth in an afterschool program, summer camp, or educational setting.
Demonstrated ability to lead activities, manage group dynamics, and support positive youth development.
Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Ability to coach and mentor staff while maintaining a collaborative team environment.
Knowledge of child development principles, behavior management techniques, and youth programming best practices.
CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
Additional Requirements
Must pass a background check and have a clear criminal record.
Physical ability to participate in activities, including bending, lifting, and being on your feet for extended periods.
